Indonesian Beauty Treatments

Indonesian Beauty

Indonesian beauty treatments have been practiced for centuries to rejuvenate, inside and out. Originating in the palaces of Bali and Java, many were part of the traditional 40 day purification ritual for royal brides in preparation of the wedding ceremony. Today these ancient practices have been transformed into popular spa treatments for deep relaxation and softer, more radiant skin. This article will share a closer look at Indonesian beauty practices.

Begin your Indonesian spa experience with a foot massage and scrub. Massaging the feet instantly relaxes, promoting healing and bringing the body back into balance. A therapeutic soak can moisturize and soothe. We also recommend a rejuvenating, vitamin rich foot balm with lasting glide and high absorption.

Follow the foot treatments with a full-body Indonesian massage. Indonesian massage, influenced by Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, is a holistic treatment that typically involves stretching techniques, long kneading strokes, skin rolling, drumming, reflexology, accupressure and aromatherapy. Use a high quality carrier oil like coconut oil and mix with your favorite essential oils, like lemongrass or ginger. It will increase circulation, release tension and stimulate nerve endings, relaxing the body, head to toe.

Lulur means „coating the skin“ in Javanese. In Mandi Lulur, a special paste is applied to the body, painted on, and left to dry. The paste often contains rice flour, turmeric, tamarind, ground nuts and aromatics like flowers, cinnamon, vanilla, jasmine and sandalwood. These natural ingredients contain powerful properties to relax, cleanse, moisturize, heal and support the skin. Once dry, the paste is gently rubbed off, exfoliating dead cells and revealing fresh, soft skin. Many spas follow the Mandi Lulur with an herbal wrap to draw out toxins, smooth and heal the skin.

Finally, a bath is used to extend relaxation. While often a warm bath with flower petals like gardenia or ylang-ylang, some prefer a yogurt bath called Mandi Susu. Considered at one time the fountain of youth, milk baths are believed to intensely soften and purify the skin. Enzymes stimulate cell regeneration and restore pH balance. If you want to skip the yogurt bath, some practitioners recommend applying yogurt to the skin like a lotion, post Mandi Lulur, for additional nourishment and moisturization before the fragrant flower bath.
